The Royal Alberta Museum

The Royal Alberta Museum (RAM) was commissioned by Alberta Infrastructure. Q4 Architects was retained by the exhibit contractor and renowned cultural design experts, Kubik, to act as the Architect of Record and Coordinating Professional for the interior gallery fit-out for the 5 feature galleries.

As Architect of Record, Q4A’s primary role was to translate the gallery design drawings into an intent-based set of drawings for the purposes of obtaining jurisdiction approval (building permits).

This complex scope-of-work included coordination of mechanical, electrical and plumbing, in close collaboration alongside Smith+ Anderson consulting engineers.

Throughout the construction phase, Q4A conducted field reviews to ensure work was progressing in accordance with the permit drawings and building code requirements.

The design and thought process for the 5 feature galleries of the museum: Children’s Gallery, Bugs Gallery, Human History Gallery, Natural History Gallery and the Manitou Stone Gallery was strictly based on the program requirements, and the project was a detailed collaboration with a wide variety of specialist teams to bring the project to fruition.

There are more than 2.4 million objects in the Royal Alberta Museum collection with more than 5,300 objects on display throughout the newly invented galleries.

This was a culturally sensitive build, done in-tandem with Kubik.

With a focus on children and family, the newly created Children’s Gallery and space dedicated to the Manitou Asinîy, an object of great spiritual significance to regional Indigenous Peoples, have become a cherished part of the city and Province’s cultural landscape.

Q4A is proud to be the Architect of Record (Gallery Fit Out) for this inspiring place.
