- If you were a building, what type would you be, and why?
If I were a building, I'd like to be a Historical Muskoka Cottage! The architecture is often simple, yet charming. I would want to be quaint, yet elegant, fun, with a relaxing atmosphere where family and friends will be drawn to gather together to be with each other and enjoy laughter and tears, great food, drinks and sitting around fires. Where memories for generations would be made and my walls would have all the stories. - What is your favourite construction material?

Halifax - historical, vibrant, old, friendly charming and humble. - Sunrise or Sunset?
Both, I can’t choose! Sunrise, because everything is so still and peaceful... everyone else is still sleeping! The day still has so much potential. And I’m always grateful to wake up on the right side of the grass. Sunset, Grateful for another day. So much potential for tomorrow. And I’m still on this side of the grass. - Cat, Dog, Other?
Likely a dog. I think it would be great if the whole family was so excited to see me every time I came in the door! Everyone would need me and I could hide when I wanted to. Played with for fun and cuddled when sad.

- What certifications / credentials do you hold that are most important to you?
My OAA membership is the most important professional certification I hold. However, personally, my membership to the Royal Architecture Institute of Canada (RAIC) is most significant. It is not compulsory to practice, but the RAIC is an advocate for responsible architecture, and excellence in the built environment; both essential in my opinion.
- If you were a building, what type would you be, and why?
I would be a shelter—more specifically, a shelter for children and women fleeing domestic abuse. This shelter would challenge traditional views, and help to transform lives. This was the root of my thesis; enabling families who have been marginalized is still of the utmost importance to my practice.
And I would be a shelter because I care deeply about housing people. I am proud that over my career I have designed truly livable homes for thousands of families. While I love the challenges posed by all types of design, creating the perfect space for a person or family is my passion.
- What inspired you to pursue a career in architecture/design?
It’s in my DNA. Architecture runs in the family, all the way back to my great-grandfather. My father was slightly rebellious when it came to choosing a career in architecture, but he has a love of architecture and shared that with me. Because of this lineage, my progression was quite natural—even though I was given the freedom to decide for myself—I always knew that becoming an architect was my path. Not surprisingly, my son is pursuing a career in architecture. - What is your favourite construction material? (Yes, Popsicle sticks count).

- If you were a building, what type would you be, and why?
I would want to be a museum Telling a story and pushing for narrative is the cornerstone to the way I approach architecture. Well-designed and well-curated museum spaces employ immersive environments in order to elevate and bring interest to items that we may consider old, banal, or uninteresting. Through design and meticulous curation, we are enticed to look beyond the surface, to ask questions, and dig for deeper meaning. Good architecture should be enriching for both the body and the mind/soul.
- What is your favourite construction material?
Bricks! I like the idea that each brick within a building is part of a negotiated system of patterns, joints, and thresholds. Moreover, bricks are used in a wide spectrum of buildings from heritage to ultra-modern projects, but they always retain this sense of warmth and connection to the land…they are made from literal earth!
- What inspired you to pursue a career in architecture/design?
For most of my childhood, my parents would seemingly renovate our house each year as the family’s needs changed. Therefore, I grew up with this feeling of agency that our living spaces are there to serve us and that each individual should have the freedom to mold their spaces to suit them best. This is what makes the difference between a room feeling like a prison or feeling like sanctuary. Studying architecture allows me to take this idea to a professional level to help others achieve their goals for their spaces.

- If you were a building, what type would you be, and why?
I would be a hotel. When travelling, I believe the spaces we stay in influence our experience in a destination. I find it facilitating how designers interpret the sense and spirit of place that is unique to a location though design and architecture. I also love how many are filled with history and part of a city's narrative and legacy.
- What is your favourite construction material?
Wooden blocks! When I was a kid I had so many. I would use them to design buildings in my little fantasy worlds. As a I got older I would draw the buildings first, then use them to make little maquettes of my designs. A lot of my career is rooted in those early explorations and using them make my own cities.
- What inspired you to pursue a career in architecture/design?
I was always interested in design, as a child I was fascinated by seeing skyscrapers downtown getting built, and just fell in love with the idea of how 'life' all came together in urban settings. In high school I found a passion and sense of belonging from fine art, which led me to study Graphic Design and corporate branding. However, that interest in architecture never faded, and I built my career around this industry, merging my passions.
- Do you have a hobby, if so, what is it?
I'm an avid runner, I love the peace and disconnection it gives me. Whether on a trail or through downtown, I like seeing life pass by while I run. It gives me that quiet time to collect my thoughts and get away from the screen.
